WHEN was he planning on stopping?

Only thing I can figure is that maybe he was accustomed to using compressors that beep when you set the pressure, and this one didn’t.

I laugh, but a similar thing happened to me. I had filled my wheelchair tires to max psi in my nice air conditioned living room. Then, I went out into a heat wave. I stopped at a gas station to fill up, and one chair tire blew out. The attendant inside freaked out, too.

I now pay attention to ambient temp when filling tires.

cell phone video shot in portrait mode of a computer screen instead of just using the direct source from the security video, we ALL pay the price.

This could also have been a tire that was on its way to failure. Maybe separating, and he put in enough to cause it to blow.

wtf, wouldn;t the tire have been visually deforming at that point. I was adding air last week and thought wow this is taking a long time (it was one that beeps when it was done) for some reason it had kept going and was up to 38 (from 32 and should have stopped at 35) it was only a few seconds, maybe a minute but that was long enough that i knew something was going on.

That’s actually the most likely explanation.

Do not underestimate how little some people know about their vehicles.

this kinda stupid keeps up, the gov gonna instigate laws that prevent us filling our own tyres and will mandate fill cages

I’m surprised that is possible, I’d have assumed there would be enough safety margin to handle the temperature change. Guess not though. I assume it was quite startling (I’ve had my rear bike tire get worn down to the point that 120PSI of inner-tube was burst forth, and it was definitely loud).

That might be my Brother-In-Law.

Before he married my sister, they visited my dad, and he noticed the tires on their car looked low (they all had less than 15lbs of air). My dad lectured him about it, next time they came over my dad checked my sisters car again, and they all had over 70lbs of pressure. There was also no oil reading on the dipstick. Lol

I had a flat last winter (but apparently no leak? not sure how it happened). In any event, AAA’s guy happily filled my tire (recommended  inflation: 38) up to 56. I promptly let it back down to where it should have been.

Surprised me too. I suspect there was a flaw in the old tube that gave under the extra pressure. I recently had a a brand new tire tread go on me in dramatic fashion, and it had nothing to do with temperature or pressure excess . I had just changed it a couple hours before in the house, then I notice I was running over a bump. I looked down to see a hernia growing on the tread as I watched (not the sidewall, the tread) . Before I could open the valve and bleed pressure, it blew up right in my face. Pretty clearly a defective tire.

I don’t see that happening, but maybe they’d do something like put a 50PSI limit on consumer-use tire pumps or something.

Wow. Looks like he had some fix a flat in there too

I've accidentally blew up a bike tire before but I can't even imagine this.

Good catch. I was wondering if the tire was already compromised. It may not have been that much overfilled for it to fail.

I’m terrified of things like that. I usually fill for 10 seconds and then re-check until I get to 32 because of that. It takes longer but it’s at least safer (I hope)

As long as your tires are in good nick and you don’t over fill, you will be fine.

Maybe he went over on purpose in case it was slowly leaking ?
